Well, my friends, here we are. It’s the end of our Much Ado week at Words Become Superfluous, which means that we’re down to our very last theme. As promised, I’ve saved the best for last, and as I’m sure you’ve all already guessed, today we’re talking about:
Love.
Of course we are! Would you have it any other way?
Benedick and Beatrice are on my top ten list of fictional character couples, for sure. They’re like the original Clark and Claudette. The witty banter! The undeniable attraction! The witty banter! Have I mentioned that I really love the way these two talk to each other?
Benedick: A miracle! Here’s our own hands against our hearts. Come, I will have thee. But, by this light, I take thee for pity.
Beatrice: I would not deny you. But, by this good day, I yield upon great persuasion and partly to save your life, for I was told you were in a consumption.
Benedick: Peace! I will stop your mouth.
And speaking of talking to each other … I was all set to be witty and charming and maybe a tiny bit snarky today, since Dave and I are at the end of our little challenge and the man of the hour has, at least at the time of this posting, still not written me my quatrain. *
But. But. But.
The other night I was staying up past my bedtime because Neil from My Prezel Logic has come back to blogging after some time away, so there was catching up to be done. And by “catching up” I mean that Neil wrote something lovely and evocative and then I exclamation-marked all over it and then he introduced me to the works of Rudy Francisco and then I stayed up for far too long watching Youtube videos of Rudy’s performances instead of going to bed like a normal, non-word-nerd girl.
Whew!
And now I can’t be witty or charming or even a little bit snarky at all, because I’m too busy swooning. I told you earlier in the week that Neil introduced me to someone who gave me butterflies, and now it’s my turn to introduce him to you. Everyone, meet Rudy Francisco. Rudy, this is everyone. Rudy is a poet from San Diego (what is it about me and boys from San Diego?! Do they put something in the water out there?!?)
I couldn’t narrow it down to a single quote, so for this edition of Words of Wisdom, I’m giving you the whole poem. Dave, sugar, take notes.

I am not even sure where to start, he’s amazing. And, I love the smile he wears all the while, causing swoons everywhere I am sure. Amb, its way past my bedtime, so my witty is waning, and fast, but I must say that witty banter is indeed swoon-worthy in all cases, so while I was ahead by one, with the Switched at Birth selection,I am now down one because I must now revisit Much Ado…it’s just been far too long. Now, it is much ado about…sleep. Well done, my friend, well done. Another great week in blog land (an hopefully in life land also!). xox
I know, right?!? I love his smile too. He seems like he has a really great sense of humour. Sometimes “spoken word artists” can come off as just a tad pretentious, but not Rudy! (lol I say this as if I actually know the man. I have a problem, I know).

glad to make the introduction, amb. i think the success of rudy’s work mainly come from the great delivery, he doesn’t take himself too seriously, and of course the colloquial tone of his material. awesome!
Totally agree. His delivery is outstanding – relaxed but completely confident and able to hold the attention of the room. And on top of all that, he makes me laugh! Funny boys are the best boys.

Re: the poem. Outside of those angsty teen years, I’ve never been much for love poems or even poetry in general (sorry sorry–I feel that admitting this is sacrilege here). Was trained in science and though I also feel I have a creative side (with food anyway), I’ve just never been all that moved by poems. Wondering if I’m missing a gene or something?
Rudy was fun to listen to and his words were well played and obviously genuine and sincere. But (yes, the but) having been married almost two decades, I don’t see love that way anymore. In my experience it’s less about the magic and wanting to consume each other and more about surviving the minefield that is each day and being committed enough to stick it out even though sometimes you’ve had enough. Would imagine having young kids has a lot to do with those minefields and having enough. Not a ringing endorsement for marriage, but it’s been my reality and I think it’s pretty common with other middle age (ouch) couples with kids. So. Here’s to passionately romantic male poets who have great style. Refreshing for sure! Wonder what poetry he’ll write for his bride of that 60 years. I’d like to hear it 🙂

I think that’s a really good point – it’s easy to be romantic and swoon-worthy about love and relationships when you’re in the early, sparkly stages and all you have to concern yourselves with is each other. Bringing other tiny humans into the relationship and taking responsibility for them is bound to change things. How could it not?
